King, Joe Cocker, Nina Simone, Al Kooper, Hall & Oates, Cat Stevens, Bette Midler, Cornell Dupree, Miles Davis, Hank Crawford, Hubert Laws, Gato Barbieri, David "Fathead" Newman, Jimmy McGriff, Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis, Mick Taylor, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson and scores of other world-class artists have turned to Bernard "Pretty" Purdie over the past half-century in order to get the best -- and as Bernard's history demonstrates, definitive -- drum grooves for their live and studio music projects. He is recognized throughout the world as a "drummer's drummer," and given his voluminous past and ongoing creative output, can accurately be called a living legend.

Now 78, Bernard has chosen to celebrate his legacy and future as the Guest Of Honor at Bernard Purdie's Party, a celebration of some of Bernard's most notable and lasting contributions to the worlds of Rock, Funk, R&B, Pop and Jazz. Bernard will be joined by a collection of world-class artists eager to kick out the jams with the one and only Bernard "Pretty" Purdie in the best way possible, including a very special tribute to his musical companion and friend Aretha Franklin.

Bernard Purdie
Bernard Purdie
BERNARD PURDIE was born June 11, 1939 in Elkton, Maryland as the eleventh of fifteen children. Purdie began already as a six-year-old to bang out rhythms on improvised equipment. At 14 years of age he purchased his first real drum set and became the most important provider for the family - earning his pay with country and carnival bands. This "schooling" enabled Purdie to "feel my way into nearly every kind of music, 'cause I had to know all styles and was never afraid to try something new."
Purdie moved to New York in 1960 after finishing high school and played with (among others), Lonnie Youngblood before landing his first hit with King Curtis. This led to his engagement with Aretha Franklin in 1970 - the beginning of an unparalleled career. Since then, Purdie has been a regular guest in the studios of the stars of Jazz, Soul, and Rock, working together with Paul Butterfield as well as Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Hall & Oates, Al Kooper, Herbie Mann, Todd Rundgren and Cat Stevens, as well as regularly producing his own solo albums under his own name.
Jason Crosby
Jason Crosby
Over the last decade, Jason has been a member of Robert Randolph and the Family Band and the Susan Tedeschi Band, among others. In recent years, Crosby has played with Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Carlos Santana, Pete Seeger, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen and Dave Matthews in various configurations. His discography is equally as impressive with appearances on Anastasia’s multi-platinum hit “Freak of Nature” as well as Tedeschi’s Grammy Nominated “Wait for Me”; and more recent releases from Phillip Phillips, Pretty Lights, Robert Randolph, Teddy Thompson and many more.

After touring with the Long Island Youth Orchestra to countries such as China, Russia, Australia and Cuba, Crosby expanded his classical horizons by embracing other varied art forms, such as Jazz, Funk, Rock and Latin music. His two solo albums, "Out of the Box" and "Four Chords and Seven Notes Ago" display his diverse array of virtuosic talents, as he switches instruments from song to song, as well as the styles of music he creates and explores. Crosby continues to develop his own style of music, by fusing the Classical he was raised on with the Jazz that inspires his melodic maneuverings.

Will Bernard
Will Bernard
"…one of the most potent, if under recognized, guitarists on the post-Frisell/post-Scofield scene." - Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times

"Will Bernard is one of the best-kept jazz-guitar secrets on the planet." - Dan Ouellette, Billboard

An alumnus of the jazz studies program at Berkeley High School that included Peter Apfelbaum, Josh Redman, Charlie Hunter, Craig Handy and Steven Bernstein and Lenny Pickett, Bay Area guitarist/composer Will Bernard first began playing and recording on an international level during his membership in Peter Apfelbaum's Hieroglyphics Ensemble, whose first recording was on Don Cherry's "MultiKulti" (A&M 1989).

Since then Will has been involved with a host of boundary stretching groups, ranging from jazz, hip hop and world music to experimental music, with many stops in between. He has performed and recorded with Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love Orchestra, Peter Apfelbaum's various band incarnations, Beth Custer, The Coup, and Pothole to name a few. The most successful of these projects was the group T.J. Kirk (with Charlie Hunter) whose 2nd record for Warner Bros. "If Four Was One" was nominated for a Grammy in 1997. Shortly thereafter Will Bernard released his debut CD as a leader, "Medicine Hat", in 1998 on Verve/Antilles.

Subsequently Will self-produced two Albums "Will Bernard and Motherbug" (2001) and Will Bernard Trio "Directions to my House" (2005) both on his own label, Dreck to disk. The Will Bernard band has performed at The Monterey, North Sea, SF Jazz, Bumbershoot, Be- Bop and Brew, Montreal, Vancouver and The High Sierra festivals, as well as clubs across the country and through Canada. They have opened for Herbie Hancock and the Head Hunters, Jimmy McGriff, The Funky Meters, John Scofield, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Ziggy Modeliste and the Charlie Hunter Quartet.

More recently Will has been seriously expanding his musical associates and has been working with a range of musicians that include Robert Walter, Stanton Moore, Dr Lonnie Smith, Idris Muhammad, Adam Deitch, Zigaboo Modeliste, and John Medeski. Between 2002 and 2005 he toured extensively in the US with Robert Walter's 20th Congress. Sit-ins and all-star bands have included Trey Anastasio, Ruben Wilson, Johnny Vidacovitch, Melvin Seals, Living Daylights and Mike Clark's Prescription Renewal.

In 2006 Will recorded with Stanton Moore for his Telarc debut and is touring the country with Stanton's Trio, on their own and opening for Galactic. During the same year Will and Sonoma County's Groundation began a side project with Leroy Horsemouth Wallace (of reggae cult movie "Rockers" fame) and Will continued his collaborations with Fully Loaded (members of RW20th Congress, Greyboy All-stars and John Scofield) and MG5 (members of Galactic and Greyboy Allstars).

In 2007 Will Signed the the New York based Palmetto Records label and released PARTY HATS on February 20 of that year. Matt Balitsaris, President of Palmetto Records, welcomes Will: "We're psyched to have Will Bernard in the Palmetto family. He's a soulful player who writes groovy tunes with a distinctive point of view. PARTY HATS wants to live in your car." In Fall of 2007 Will left the West Coast and now lives in Brooklyn NY.
