Organist Howard Wales has typically been best known for his collaborations with Grateful Dead front man Jerry Garcia. After honing his chops during the mid-1960s backing acts ranging from Ronnie Hawkins, Lonnie Mack the Four Tops to James Brown, Wales eventually settled in San Francisco, joining the group A.B. Skhy; He first performed with Garcia at the weekly jam sessions with bassist John Kahn and drummer Bill Vitt at the Bay Area club the Matrix, and in 1970 played on the Dead's seminal American Beauty LP. Hooteroll?, the first joint Wales/Garcia album, appeared in 1971; the duo also teamed with guitarist Jim Vincent and bassist Roger Troy for a tour of the Northeast in 1972. This period also saw Howard working with guitarist Harvey Mandel appearing on Mandel's, fiery jazz-influenced, blues-based rock classic, "Baby Batter" album. Howard's own album, Rendezvous with The Sun, from in 1976 remains a seminal underground opus of acid jazz rock fusion constantly in demand among music collectors. For over the last four decades now, Wales has been quietly and meticulously self-producing and releasing high quality instrumental albums as an independent recording artist in Northern California… have you heard them yet? Few if any know the real story behind this famous unknown legend.
