American Aquarium’s sound has been labeled everything from Americana to deep-roots country to “punky, pissed off country-rock.” The North Carolina band is coming to Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley on Aug. 15 (9 p.m., $14 to $17), and judging from previous live performances they’ll rock the place hard. Music critics liken lead singer/songwriter B.J. Barham to Bruce Springsteen — and rightly so, to a point — but there’s a gritty realism to the songs that sets Barham and his band apart. Oklahoma alt-country favorite M. Lockwood Porter will open the show.
